Trucks with 4-speeds had no elongated hole (slot) in the column, only the 3-speed columns shifters. I know because I recently switched my original '48 4-speed to a 3-speed column shifter. I had to put in the slot because it serves as an anchor point for the linkage so it won't slip. Hope this helps.
