Just went through this wiring my 55 2nd. Drew out a ton of circuits before
coming up with one (including 4 diodes) that would work. Problem is- how to
get the brake lights to work (together) without having that circuit
inhibiting individual operation of the turn signals. Or, how to keep the
turn signal circuit (say on the left side) from supplying voltage to the
front signal when the rear-left brake light comes on.
The trick (for me) was to purchase a little control box, designed for
trailers. Cost about $10 at Autozone. It's got all the right logic in it,
so that these problems are taken care of. Much easier than trying to wire
it up myself...
The problem, as with your truck, was the "add-on" turn signal switch. In my
case it was a simple switch only. My (Haywire) harness had instructions for
connecting to all sorts of differnt columns (GM/F*rd/Mopar), but no
provisions for a simple switch like this. I think the *magic* usually
happens inside of the column harness.

I am working on rebuilding a 50 chevy PU, a good part of it was in boxes
and pieces when I bought it . Trying to get enough of the truck
together to get it through MVD inspection. I have an add on turn signal
switch (6 volt system)which wraps around the steering column. Does
