Yes, it would have resulted in full scale deflection, but inserting a
series resistance would result in the gauge never getting to empty.

Thanks to the timely posts of Keith and Mike, I was able to test the

gas gauge sending unit. With the float fully depressed, it read out at 1.5
ohms, and with it fully up, the reading was 33.5 ohms. The movement was nice

and sure and progressive.
Next the unit was wired back into the system and powered up as
before. Also, just as before, the needle soared to full and stayed there in
all float positions. Keith's suggestion about a bad ground proved simple to
test. A clip lead was run from the gauge body to the seat base and "wallah"
-- working gas gauge!
Moving the float fully down produced a reading only on the "dot" for

empty, and moving it fully up shows only just above the 3/4 full mark. Even
without full scale deflection, this will be very much more info that the DPO

was getting out of the gauge.
A question arises out of this. Had the sending unit read 0 ohms at
the bottom and more than 33.5, say 50 at the top, would the indicator needle

have attained full deflection?
