Keith, 1956 was the first year Chevrolet introduced the factory
Tandem rear axle setup. It was only available in the 10,000 series
(Supper Heavy Duty 2-1/2 ton ) with a 32,000# GVW! There were (3)
different wheel bases available in '56,the 10403 (156"), 10503 (176")
and 10703 (194"). I don't know if they added models between '56 and
'59, ie: 8000 or 9000 series. They all had as standard equipment;
Power Steering, Power Brakes (Hydrovac) and a Spicer 5 speed
transmission. These trucks all had a 3 speed Power Divider with
additional underdrive gearing. Its gear ratios were 2.22:1 (Puller
Gear), 1.22:1 (Underdrive) and 1:1 (Direct Drive). I have only ever
seen one of these monsters and it has been picked clean with only the
frame and drive line still there (heavy iron). All parts are the
same '56 through '59 with changes made for the '59 model year.
I would be interested in out side steps and power steering set up if
this truck is being parted out! Let me know!
Hope this helps!
