Kevin is accurate, however to find top dead center once you thumb has been
puffed out of position then you look on the harmonic balancer on the front of
the crankshaft and line the timing mark on the balancer up with the block
mounted pointer. Close enough is close enough.
Also if you have no executive asssistant you can take off the valve cover and
when both valves are closed on the no. 1 cylinder and time it as above.
Number one is the front cylinder of the forwardmost head.
Also in hooking up HEI I have always understood that the wire that goes to
the distributor has to be replaced with a heavier wire
