Yes the split rims used on the 1-1/2 ton and above trucks are the devil
reincarnate, and they've killed many people over the years. They have
been known to blow apart going down the road and hit people in nearby
cars. 

They are not the same as the "lock ring" rims as used on the 3/4 and 1
ton. Lock ring type rims are dangerous when improperly installed, but
reasonably safe if parts are not dirty or rusted. I have never heard of
a lock ring coming apart AFTER its been inflated.

The heavier split rims are what are called "center locks". The rim is in
two halves that have a raised lip that locks together. They were a bad
plan to start with and every time the tires get changed it wears the lip
some and rust takes it's toll with age. I don't know of ANYBODY who
works on these anymore.

I would suggest getting some later model rims with lock rings or one
piece rims for it.
