How to make a Tool roll for a Morgan
This is a description of how at least an early 60's Toll roll is made, I
have not seen any other styles except this one in the 50's/60s.
but if anyone does have a different method or comment, I am welcome to
them, as to make it close to original is of most concern. Most of all
those of you that know how to sew would be glad to be corrected in a
technique that would help with the folded edges!
First:
Need
scissors, sewing machine with black thread (heavier is better), lots of
large pins to fold over and hold edges, a Thimble (did not have!)
Useful
pincushion, Band-Aid, someone that knows how to sew.
The material is a leatherette black material, or vinyl like cloth with a
pattern very much the same as tops and door panels.
its got a cloth backing coarse threads as it standard at most cloth
shops. Buy a yard or so (mine was 6 dollars on sale/yard ). if they
give you a choice take the heavier material).
0) set your sewing machine stitcher to about 3/8 inch between holes
(this was my first time using this device!)
1)cut out a piece of square material 22.5 tall x 19 wide (I used
a shop wood square..)
2)cut a strap 1/2 inch wide and 25 inches long (Morgan always worked in
inches)
3) lay the long side up and down to you, cloth side up on clean surface.
3)fold the bottom of your roll over 3/8 inch and sew it that way. you
need to hold it folded with pins otherwise the machine will wander on you
in stitching. Take the pins out as you go along.
4)Stop. Fold and pin the sides over 3/8 inch on each side NOT the top.
5)put the material with the cloth side up, already sewn side at the
bottom, and the strap cloth side up, attach the center of the strap on
the right side 9.5 inches down from the top with a pin. it should
overlap only 1/2 inch onto the cloth and stretches out to the right (your
going to take the base of this strap in later).
6)fold the bottom up with an overlap of 7.5 inches, this will form the
pockets of the tool roll.
7)REpin together the sides still folded over and now together, this four
layers at the sides of the pockets.
7b)you are now going to sew the right side, the pockets and the other
side and top in one session, first you need to mark the pockets with
pins.
going from each side every 2.5-2.75 inches at the bottom put in a pin to
mark that point going up, do this only three times on each side,
you will end up with three small pockets on each side, and one larger
(about 4-4.5 inches) in the center. Put pins in the top of the folded
over part, the one that is 7.5 inches up from these lower pins, at the
same spacing. It should start to look like a pinned together toll roll
now.
8)take the sewing machine and run it down the down the right side from
top right to bottom , centered on the folded edge (roughly 1/4 inch in
from edge) , taking out the pins as you go. stop at the bottom corner ,
turn and go along the bottom to your first pin at about 2.5 inches, run
up straight toward the top pin 8 inches, this with take you PAST the edge
of your tool roll/pin , but this is also what holds it in, turn left and
go 90 degrees to it, away from the side you have sewn and then straight
down again through the next set of pins, , then along the bottom again to
the next pin set, etc you are then alternating this procedure back and
forth until you get to the other bottom corner. now run up the left
side, to the left top and stop.
9) Fold over the top 3/8 inch, pin, and sew it down as well.
10) you should now have a tool roll, with seven pockets, a strap carrying
off to your right. fold over the top at just above the midpoint over the
pockets this is your cover, now roll from left to right and use your
strap as a tie to itself.
11)check all fingers

questions I have...
I have seen a roll for a jack that was older, and wonder if it had one?
very similar method of construct and strapping.
a Tool roll has a single strap that wraps about the roll, how was it
tied? a half hitch concept? or half a shoe knot?
