Kat,
Generally, the other end connects to a drive gear on the tranny. At least it
does on my '67 4/4 ("the thinking man's car" - from an old thread).

Subject: speedometer cable
> Hi All,
> My speedometer is not working. The cable is connected to the back of the
> speedometer gauge, but the long cable is laying on the floorboard. I have
> searched my manuals, and can not find where this cable should be connected
to
> make the gauge work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
