Hey Gang,

Some of the blush seems to be off the big race with the death of two of the
competitors in a crash with a bus. If the details in the report is at all
accurate, it was such a terrible waste... It seems particularly sad to have
a 17 year old boy lose his life in the middle of nowhere, racing toward...
nothing. And in a VW at that.

Nonetheless, it is a shame for the Plus 8 to have to retire, having stayed in
the top 1/3 of the standings for half the race. I wish the report were more
complete as to why and how the engine blew. Maybe more info will surface
later? Maybe our British correspondents will have more details.

Perhaps all hope should not be surrendered. The Lancia, long believed to be
defunct, has reappeared with a rebuilt gearbox.

The race has been fascinating, albeit tragic. I urge any of you who have not
visited one of the race websites to do so. The two best are>>>

http://discovery.com/area/exploration/race/archive.html
http://www.carnet.co.uk/pekingparis/html/news.htm

The first site above has the best reports, the second has the day-to-day
standings.
