.049 isn't very difficult but it's not the easiest stuff. We had to slow down
to about half or 1/3 of the speed we welded even 0.065. Granted that none of
us are expert welders, but even the welding instructor had to slow down when
welding the 0.049. I guess that's all I'm saying with 0.049, if you don't slow
down and control the heat it's easy to blow through.
Let's see, using 0.040" should save you about 17.8% more weight. Our frame
without any mounts on it (tubing only) weighs 48lbs, we would have saved
8.5lbs. We're just happy to have saved 22.7% using 1.25"x.040" instead of
1"x0.083"
