Well, it started out as a really nice drive yesterday, but
pulling away from a stop, shifting from 2nd to 3rd, suddenly
I hear a rumble and find I'm free-wheeling. At first I
thought the transmission had slipped out of gear, but no
gear I tried kept me from coasting to a stop. I look under
the car revealed that the drive shaft was turning, but that
motion wasn't getting transmitted to the wheels, just a
very low volume rumbling as it rotates, so little noise
you wouldn't notice if the car was moving. For a few miles
prior to this the car seemed to be gently "surging" as it rolled
at low speed. Surge is really two strong a word - just sort
of an oscillation in movement in the lower gears. Anyway,
two hours later I had been towed home (only 7 miles) and it
looks like the car will be spending the rest of the summer
and probably a lot of next year in the garage.
Does anyone have an idea what in the differential might
have gone? Something similar happened to my MGB dacades
ago, but in those days the fix was to swap out a $100
junk yard rear end so I never learned exactly what broke.
I have a hunch *this* repair is going to cost a lot more!
Thanks for any ideas.
