I have no idea if it is possible for this to be a cause for MGs, but
during my Spitfire-owning years I heard of similar symptoms occurring
due to inadequate venting of the fuel tank. As fuel was used, a vacuum
would develop in the tank, until the pump could no longer pump fuel, and
the engine starved. Although generally this would cause the car to
stop, but it would then mysteriously (until you realised the cause)
start just fine 5 minutes later, once some air had managed to seep into
the fuel tank.
I guess in an MG if this happened you should hear frantic ticking from
the fuel pump (if you can hear it over everything else at highway
speeds!).
