My OD is in it's second car now. In the first one it would do that on long
trips or when it got too hot (a nod to the thin oil comment.)
When I changed cars I got a rebuild kit. It's not very big and consists
mostly of O-rings and very small valve balls. I also cleaned the solenoid
plunger well and put in a new filter. It helped to have the unit out of the
car, but possible with it in. On putting the thing into the redcar, it was
back up to snuff again until last summer.
It started dropping out on occasion.then died entirely. I was in despair
until the car just died and I discovered a broken charging lead on the
alternator. No charge from alternator means no battery and no power to
ancillaries. When I fixed the lead, all of a sudden I had the OD back.
Thinks, "As the lead was bending back and forth and slowly breaking each
strand in the wire, the amperage allowed through the wire went down making
the magnet in the OD solenoid unable to keep the plunger in place". Check
all the connections from the solenoid tab on the casing back to the
fuseblock and beyond.
