Have you checked to see if the damper has moved internally (i.e. the
rubber ring has broken)?
I would set the engine up at top dead center and see where the pointer
points....
I believe that the timing marks on the later engine matched a notch on
the damper with a graded pointer sticking out from the timing chain
cover at about the 11:00 position looking at it from the front. Not
sure whether it's AM or PM....
