Hole in the backing plate

There is a hole in the MGB backing plate between the transmission and
the oil pan. Does it accomplish any purpose? If one was making a
custom back plate, is there any reason to put that hole in?

Alternatively, would there be anything to gain by moving that hole to
someplace were you could actually see the flywheel? Maybe put a TDC
mark on the flywheel and on the backing plate for adjusting the
timing?
