i have an MSD 6a on a '72 MGB that hasn't been driven for sometime. It's great,
but i would NOT use
one of these things without high performance plug and coil wires.
it does not replace the points. but it can be triggered from a variety of
sources.
the MSD effectively isolates the points and condenser from the secondary
ignition circuit. It sends
a "trickle" of current through your points so they are supposed to last much
longer, which in my
experience they did.
I had been having some high RPM mis-fires and similar problems on rainy or wet
days. once installed
i experienced a couple of minor, IMO, "gotchas". my coil sprung a leak from
being overheated ( i
replaced it with one that had no internal ballast which fixed that problem) and
I could never get my
Smiths tach. to work with the MSD even after several sessions with one of their
tech support
persons. He couldn't have been more helpful but after mailing me extra parts
and wiring diagrams and
more extra parts. I gave up and bought a VDO tach that would connected directly
to the "tach" output
of the MSD.
The difference between the spark from you conventional MG ignition and one with
an MSD installed is
like the difference between being tickled and being kicked by a mule! Don t
touch the plug wires
while the engine is running!
