Are you sure it is between the head and the block? It is very common for
the rocker cover gasket to leak at that point worst because of the angle of
the engine. As well as replacing the gasket you should replace the
compressible rubber washers under the fixing bolts from time to time. But
even then I don't think the cork gaskets are as thick as they used to be and
have had to shim out the rubber washers to get a seal. Do the wet test as
previously advised, but bad valves should be able to be heard in the exhaust
or the intake as a chuffing, and you may hear bad rings by listening at the
oil filler aperture. There should also be a fairly steady partial vacuum
here, and not a rhythmic pressurisation.
