Just went through this one earlier this summer, I found it in my case (
I've got a 78 b ) Not sure what
year yours is but I have to assume its a late one because of the exact same
symptom.
A there is a ground wire that became corroded on the (sitting in the car
facing forward)
on the right inner side member of the engine bay beneath the fuse box
area. clean the connections to ground. also I found that one of the four
brown wires that were incased in a plastic rectangular case
located in the same vicinity had separated and occasionally made contact.
After fixing both of these issues my gages our working great. took a
little time to find the issues though.
If this doesn't help search the archive by typing in your problem here
and you can research what others have gone through to solve there issues. I
find a lot of solutions this way. What a great site this is.

Good luck
Hope this helps you solve it.
> On another note, does anyone have experience with all of the dash
gages, brake lights, and turn signals going 'out' together at random times,
only to reappear at other random times? I suspect its a loose connection
somewhere, but what connections would these all share?
