  Sorry to hear abouut the damage to life and property in your country.  

  About the cables: I believe the cables and mechanisms are suitable to
the task.  The problem is that they are dried out and/or rusted.  I had
a B on which the heater control knobs wouldn't turn.  I corrected the
probs by cleaning and oiling the cables and mechanisms.  It was a PITA
to take it all apart but it was worth it.  It beats hanging out in bars.
