Well I believe I have tried all suggestions. I checked out the 79's coolant
temperature when the thermostat opens; it's 160 degrees like the NEW
thermostat says it should be, I "burped" the bubbles out of the coolant
system, I retimed the car with vacuum advance plugged (now about 12-13 BTDC at
idle and 17-18 at 1500RPM and runs good), and I checked the fan direction (no
matter which way I hooked the wires up from the switch it still ran
counterclockwise, which should be the correct direction). The temp gauge
climbs past normal- about halfway between there and hot- when the car is
driven for the first 10 minutes or so, then settles back down to normal. I
took it out for a 20 mile drive and edged it towards 90 mph on a lonely
stretch of road, then to town and several stops and starts. Temperature
remained normal after all this except for the first 10 minutes of driving.
I'll sand the connection on the sensor next. Has never boiled over, but it
seems that the gauge is working properly-if just beyond midway on the gauge
should be about 160 degrees F.
I'll drive it for a few more days and see what happens. I'm not sure how to
test the radiator and water pump.
New question:
I used everyones advice and pulled all the suggested smog gear, that has never
been hooked up since I've owned the car. I did manage to get the air injection
manifold off undamaged. I plugged off all the holes except the one created by
the adaptor that goes from the gulp valve into the head or manifold. It is
unthreaded and was semi-sealed with some red, flexible, plastic-looking
"stuff".
What do I use to plug this hole and what sealant?
Thanks for all the advice,
Monte
