I don't know whether this is the same as the clay I got from Halfords in the
UK but I found it left no marks regardless of whether I used it in lines or
circles. I was amazed at the results - and very pleased. I used it in
desperation on a car that had been parked on the streets of London for about
five years and despite occasional washes and polishes was covered in specks
of tree sap and traffic film. Nothing else would shift the tree sap except
wet and dry of which even the finest was too aggressive, of course. The
clay removed all the sap, which could be felt as raised bumps with the
fingertips, and none of the paint surface although I suppose it might remove
some heavily oxydised paint which is going to be removed by the polish
anyway.
Unless your paintwork has a foreign film, like tree sap, that can't be
removed by normal polishing or cutting, I would say it is unnecessary.
