Water?  That's what brake fluid absorbs causing the corrosion in brake
systems.  The problem with brake fluid in a brake system is once it
absorbs water it never "dries out."  The water has no way of leaving the
system.  Since the springs are already exposed to water whenever it
rains, what's the difference?

I think graphite key lube would work too.  You want some material that
once it dries it leaves behind no sticky residue to hold dirt.  Dirt in
any kind of sticky material is like valve grinding compound.
