I researched this subject fairly well before putting a '67 MGB motor in
my MkII.
I can't address all the "gearing" issues because I didn't fool with them.
My MkII has a slightly lower gear ratio rear end than earlier MGA's so
no conversion was necessary.
However, concerning power output I think the following should be said:
1) An MGB motor will provide significant power increase over a stock MGA,
but only if that stock MGA is a 1500. It will provide some increase over
a 1600, I don't know whether it would be significant. I found virtually
no advantage over my original 1622 motor. This is comparing two bone
stock motors with identical carbs and exhaust (MGA manifold). I'm
planning to put a MGA header on the car, but I don't know whether that
will help the B motor any more than it would have helped the A motor.
2) It is not necessary to use the MGB tranny in the conversion. I used
my MGA transmission, which made the whole thing a hell of a lot easier,
not to mention more easily reversible. Having the overdrive in there is
certainly an advantage, but not necessary. Particularly given the MkII
rear end, which is between 3.9 and 4.55, although I don't remember the
number off hand, 4.125 maybe?
