Ken: Most likely the pump orientation will make a difference. Many SU fuel pumps use flat brass disks that settle against a machined surface as a valves. If the pump isn't oriented upright, the valves won't seat. I don't know about the later SU pumps, but I've seen some after markets which use a type of plastic reed valve. These may not be as susceptible to orientation, but I would still install them with the discharge nipple vertically.
