Carl,

Its been years since I've done this, but you can go to a major train
station, like New Haven, Bridgeport, or Stamford, take a train to Grand
Central, then the subway to wherever you're headed.
Alternately, you can pick up the subway outside of NYC - I think maybe MT.
Vernon, but somebody living in the area may be able to give better info??
