Because it is quite easy to change the cam without doing the bearings,
you don't even need to pull the engine.  The same cannot be said of
replacing the bearings as well.

To quote the Haynes manual:

1-The camshaft should show to signs of wear, and if wear is apparent it
must be renewed.
2- If the bearings are worn or pitted or the metal backing is visible,
they must be renewed, The operation requires special tools, and the
local agent should be consulted.
....

Look at them.  If they need it, then I would expect that you are going
to have to pull your engine to get it done.

I have used reground mild performance cams and been very happy with
them.  You can get them for about $100 with no core.
I have bought them from NW imports in the past, but others are around I
am sure.
