The reasonit is backfiring through the carbs is that an intake valve is open
when ignition occurs in that cylinder. The question is why?

Here are possible reasons why?

There is an intermittant short in the distributor rotor or cap, possible due
to a carbon track or crack.

The wire are running parallel to each other for too long a length, causing
induction that will cause another plug to fire.

There is a failure of the cylinder head gasket that is causing burning gases
to move from one cylinder to another. Do a compression test or blow down test
to see.

Another possibility is there is a build up of carbon in one or more cylinders
that stays hot or burning and ignites the fuel mixture as it enters the
cylinder. You can try very slowly squirting a little water into the throat
of each carb while the engine is running. This will cause the carbon to break
loose.

This is not a mixture problem, or is it a timing problem.
