Way too pessimistic I'd have said. The pedal return spring just pulls the
push-rod off the m/c piston, it doesn't pull the clutch release bearing away
from the clutch cover. It is the roller-bearing release bearing that has to
have the pull-off spring fitted at the slave to pull the two out of contact,
the carbon-faced item was built to run that way. I drove 400 miles with a
busted pedal return spring a couple of months ago with no ill-effects, it's
amazing how much resistance it adds to the pedal. Sure the smell isn't
road-kill on the exhaust?
