In order to check the operating temperature...get a candy thermometer.
It is a glass tube.
With car at oper. temp. carefully undo the radiator cap (not the
overflow) and insert thermo. Be careful not to touch the sides or
metal neck with thermo. this should give the actual temp of coolant.
Then you can decide if you want to have the gauge/sending unit rebuilt

I live in NW Illinois and seldom run the cars from Nov to Feb. I put
165 degree thermostats in all of them.
