Well last weekend I put in a new sound system and a car alarm... that was a
real ball-ache. The DPO stereo was insanely badly wired in. long list of
horror stories. Every part of the job was seriously problematic, but now i
have a great soundsystem. 50W CD player in the dash looking like it was
always meant to be there, new high-performance 4" speakers in the doors with
in-line bass filters, and 2 6x9"s on the shelf in carpeted boxes. The sound
makes such a difference (i just wish i'd got round to doing this when i used
to drive 2 1/2 hours each way each weekend!)

The Car alarm was essentially straightforward. Most of the wiring could be
done with crimp-on 3 way tap splices (i dunno what you call them in
american, but you have a little plastic doo-dad with a chane for the
existing wire and a channel for your new wire and a sort of flat fat metal
"m" that crimps down through the insulation and makes the connection, the
whole thing is insulated automatically and is super-neat and quick). The
only cut required was for the starter-interrupt. The main problems were
routing and mounting the siren, making sure that all power was being drawn
from fused rather than unfused circuits, and adjusting the radar sensor. the
last one was the real pig. The idea is that you have a "chirp" zone and a
trigger zone, so that if someone leans over the car it chirps and if they
reach in it triggers. In reality, a hair too far sensitive and it goes off
if the wind blows the car cover, and a hair too far the other way and it
doesn't go off unless you have your hand by the sensor! GRRRR.

This weekend, wax and beautify. General check-over for any imminent
problems. play with the carb, possibly lean out the mixture a little, and
try to track down the 1 in 20 run-on problem. maybe an oil change (500 miles
too early but never hurts). other than that definately a weekend to drive
and enjoy.

cheers

Joe
