'One of the World's Most Beautiful Cars' for Auction
A highly sought-after 1936 Alvis Speed 20 Drop Head Coupe regarded by many
collectors as one of the most beautiful cars ever built is one of the feature
cars of Mondays Official Grand Prix Auction presented by Shannons at the
Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
Appropriately finished in Fine Wine Red, with a tan interior and cream trim,
the
Alvis has completed just 5000km since a painstaking, four-year restoration.
Introduced in 1932, the Speed 20 was fitted with a 2.7 litre six cylinder
engine
and a four speed all synchromesh manual gearbox. This gave it a top speed of
145km/h, combined with excellent steering and roadholding for the era.
A contemporary road test reported that: To drive an Alvis Speed 20 is to
realise
how racing experience improves the breed, for this particular Alvis behaves as
one might expect a thoroughbred racer to perform . ..
Shannons are expecting bids in the $155,000 to $180,000 range.
69 vehicle and 56 automobilia lots in the auction, which starts at 3.00pm on
Monday. Until then, all auction lots can be viewed free by the public in the
Concourse Area of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre during Melbourne Motor Show
opening hours.
