You can solder the crimp connectors depending on the type they are.  Some of 
them have "removable" plastic insulators, some don't.

It is likely your crimper is of poor quality.  I have several of the poor 
quality type ... I too have experienced loose connections
with these.  I do have two crimpers that I like.  One is made by Stanley Tools, 
I've had it for years, I don't know if it is still
available; it puts a little dimple in the crimp connector, rather than just 
squishing it.  The other tool I bought at Radio Shack.
This tool has sort of square pockets and is designed to not only squish but to 
roll the ends of the terminal in toward the wire as
you squeeze it.  I just took a look at www.radioshack.com and didn't find it.  
I did find the "squish" tool there however, so don't
assume you can walk into a Radio Shack and find this tool.

Heck Neil, I don't even know if you have Radio Shacks.  You probably can get 
Stanley Tools though.
