The functional difference is that the later type is a normal starter and
the old type is a Rube Goldberg-esque contraption whose operation would
cause outbreaks of guffaws among bystanders were it not hidden in the
engine compartment. I don't think it's a straight swap -- I had to go to
the later type starter when I went to the 4-synchro tranny, and the
starter goes with the tranny -- or rather, with the later rear engine
plate that was required. But maybe there's a simpler solution... too bad
there's no provision for hand-cranking.
