I am running a late OD tranny in my 66. It does not have a dipstick, so I
filled it through the side hole as you described. I am using also using
30wt engine oil, with no problems except for a little seepage from an
unidentified location.
frank krajewski had this to say:
>I recently acquired a very rusty 79B which I am proceeding to part out.
>It has an od tranny that works fine which I am going to put in my 80 B.
>My shop manual (Bentley) says to fill the tranny, drive it, then check
>the dipstick as the oil will flow back to fill the od. As far as I know
>the late model trannies do not have a dipstick but simply a side filler
>hole into which you add oil until it runs out. Am I missing something or
>do the od trannies have a dipstick? I haven't removed it yet from the 79
>but I did find a grommet behind the console which plugged a hole in the
>transmission tunnel, but after reaching in the hole and groping the
>tranny I could not locate a dipstick. Is it a matter of side filling the
>tranny, running the car and then topping off the tranny? As an aside the
>Bentley Manual recommends the same oil for the engine and tranny or to
>use 90 weight hypoid differential oil. I have always used 30 wt.
>non-detergent in my MG trannies, my 64, 80, and my MGA. What is the
>final word? I know we have beaten this to death but there seems to be
>some inconsistency in the shop manuals. I always preferred Bentley to
>Haynes since it is a repro of the factory manual.
