The key word there is non-detergent!.
Yep.. MG's... same oil in the engine and tranny.
I use Castrol 20-50 year round here in MD in my engine and O/D
tranny. Always have... always will.
Now the interesting thing to me is .... on a N.d.V O/D tranny...
in an MG we use '30' weight..... yet in Triumph Spitfire NdV O/D tranny
I've always used (as the original literature that came with it when I bought it
new)

I recently acquired a very rusty 79B which I am proceeding to part out.
It has an od tranny that works fine which I am going to put in my 80 B.
My shop manual (Bentley) says to fill the tranny, drive it, then check
the dipstick as the oil will flow back to fill the od. As far as I know
the late model trannies do not have a dipstick but simply a side filler
hole into which you add oil until it runs out. Am I missing something or
do the od trannies have a dipstick? I haven't removed it yet from the 79
but I did find a grommet behind the console which plugged a hole in the
transmission tunnel, but after reaching in the hole and groping the
tranny I could not locate a dipstick. Is it a matter of side filling the
tranny, running the car and then topping off the tranny? As an aside the
Bentley Manual recommends the same oil for the engine and tranny or to
use 90 weight hypoid differential oil. I have always used 30 wt.
non-detergent in my MG trannies, my 64, 80, and my MGA. What is the
final word? I know we have beaten this to death but there seems to be
some inconsistency in the shop manuals. I always preferred Bentley to
Haynes since it is a repro of the factory manual.
