The earlier ratios were such that there wasn't much point in using o/d 3rd,
it was almost the same as 4th. Later o/ds had the od 3rd ratio almost
slap-bang in the middle of 3rd and 4th which makes it an excellent
hill-climbing alternative to a high-revving 3rd or a low-revving 4th. If
you are travelling in o/d 4th and you want to overtake you just flick it out
of o/d, if you want to overtake more smartly take it from o/d 4th to o/d
3rd.
I've never heard of anyone changing a '4th only' box to '4th and 3rd' but I
can imagine it is not simple. Don't be tempted to short out the lockout
switch which will give you o/d in all gears, if you reverse with o/d engaged
you can trash the o/d.
