The concensus seems to be replace the cable, but when you do, make sure the
cable isn't kinked, bound or twisted internally.
I usually reattach the cable at the gearbox (or whatever) lower end first.
then thread it up through the engine compartment to the firewall. Then make
sure that is straight and put it through the firewall to the gauge. Fit the
squared cable end into the back of the gauge, so that it engages the gear.
Gently tighten the nut by hand, just to snug.
