Larry: Actually there are three things that keep the oil in the rear case (in your case!) they are the rear hub oil seal (a rubber and metal seal inside the rear hub), and the paper gasket and O-ring on the axle shaft itself. The only way to get to the rear hub oil seal is to pull the hub and replace the seal. These are long lived but do harden and leak given enough time.
