How about the father of the experimental aircraft industry in the
USA (circa 1930's). Later, when he started using modern dope/glue
formulations, (circa 1960's), for fabric covering he continued to
use the old method of soaking the stuff through on one side only.
The instructions on the can specifically required application on
both sides to guarantee adhesion to any structural member.
Failed to read the fine print, and his homebuilt fell out of the
sky when the fabric delaminated on a control surface and
fluttered. He and his wife were 92 at the time.
(Didn't read the official accident report, so let's call it
initial speculation in a magazine).
