For the toolbox also make
>up a couple of large alligator clips that can clamp onto a bolt head and
>give a good ground point. Many probe clips are not big enough, or do not
>have enough tension to quarantee a good connection through dirt and oil.
I most often use my multimeter with a short black alligator-clip to
alligator-clip lead connected from a suitable grounding point on the
car to the ground (-) (earth) input on the meter. this way I just
have to worry about the red probe when doing my troubleshooting.
I also found that when your headlights suddenly stop working at 2am
on a moonless night when you have just left a party in the middle of
nowhere, it is very tempting to connect a long clip lead from the
fuse panel to the nearest headlamp bullet connector and leave
further troubleshooting to the morning when it is light. The dreaded
previous owner (dpo) of my car replaced the wiring harness, but I am
sure I have not yet found ALL of the connection that he twisted
together and taped...
