Yes, the "Freeze Plugs" holes original purpose was to provide webs to hold the inner sand cores in place. I suppose they got to be called "freeze plugs" when they sometimes would pop out when the coolant froze in those pre ethelyn glycol days. Older blocks had thinker walls, so mayber they were strong enough to resist cracking until the plugs popped out. |
