I have a '67 5 main B, and a 58 MGA with a 3 main MGB (1800) motor. I have
found that the 3 main is a bit more free revving, so it feels like it has more
power. The early 3 main B motors did have problems (first 1/2 year production
in the American West only), but the factory replaced them free of charge with a
more durable 3 main motor (I am not sure what the change was. Basically the
crank was a little weak for the way people drove the cars, and tended to warp,
then crack at over-revving. The 5 main is rock solid, but not as free
revving. For a '64 I wouldn't worry about it, just make sure the oil pressure
is good.
