How could th EGR valve (which allows some exhaust gas back into the intake)
make the engine use oil? Stuck open will cause a poor lumpy idle, stuck
closed will normaly cause no symptoms.
Getting back to problem at hand if an engine sets for several years the rings
can sieze and this will give a low compression reading, and make the engine
use oil
Good luck,
