I recall that I went to replace mine when I first acquired the car, since
it didn't seem to operate smoothly, but flashed and blinked as one turned
the knob. The new one certainly was expensive, and moreover, behaved
precisely the same way. So what I assumed was a defect was apparently a
"feature". So don't get your hopes up (unless the later models used a
different unit than my 66).
