Thanks, Eric (and the others who have offered advice and suggestions).
I will pass these ideas on to the 'experts' (of which I am *not* one)
who are pawing over my gearbox! I am pretty confident that they will
resolve the problem but I was a little worried when it didn't appear
that they could spot any obvious problem in the first place.
