One source of a clunk or rattle at the steering wheel is the steering
column bushing. Before I replaced mine I had noticeable sloppiness in the
wheel -- I could shake it up and down with an audible clunk. But it
sounds like you are talking about front-end related noises.
Jason Dutt had this to say:
>I have the same problem on my '72 right now (I think). Rattles a bit in the
>bumps, and gives a "clunk" sometimes. Everything else up there is brand new
>(swivel axles, etc.), and I've double checked it all just in case.

>it is indeed the culprit? What are some of the best ways of diagnosing
>various front-end noises?

Runs great,
looks particularly bad since some SUV clown backed into it.
If you're near Mountain View, CA,
it's the red one with the silver bootlid.
