On my B, a rattle like this was caused by worn rack bushings (the ones at each
end of the housing and that the rack slides in). You can check for this by
removing a boot and turning the wheel to the stop in that direction. Wobble the
end of the rack - if it moves relative to the housing or makes an audible
noise, bushings are worn.

I have the same problem on my '72 right now (I think). Rattles a bit in the
bumps, and gives a "clunk" sometimes. Everything else up there is brand new
(swivel axles, etc.), and I've double checked it all just in case.
Is there a way to check the steering without dismantling it to find out if
it is indeed the culprit? What are some of the best ways of diagnosing
various front-end noises?
