Todd,
Squealing brakes are usually caused by resonance of the pad against the
brake piston. Simple in concept-often difficult to resolve.
The pads may get into a vibration state because of the condition of the
surface of the pad, the surface of the rotor, the relationship of the
surfaces of pad and rotor and, who knows, maybe space dust.....
Whatever, the pad rattles/moves/vibrates agains the metal piston and the
squeal begins. First effort, which is inexpensive, is to trot on down to
the auto parts store and get some disk brake anti-squeal goo. The guys
will know what you're looking for. Put it on the pad per directions. $5
may solve the problem.
If not, then try changing the pads. While the wheel is off, wrap a
piece of 320 sandpaper around a block of wood and try sanding the rotor.
You're trying to change the resonating friction coefficient here.
Turning the rotor is the official way to do it, but the sandpaper
technique is free and may do the job without removing any metal.
Best of luck. Brake squeals can be very frustrating. OTOH, they can
suddenly just go away also.
