A buddy and I replaced both U-joints on our car. Using a crappy vise
and some very basic hand tools, we were able to reinstall nice new
U-joints. Only cost me $15 for the joints and $15 for a set of jack
stands, since all my tools are back home. It took us 3 hours from drive
up to finish, which isn't bad considering the tools we had.
I still firmly stand behind my plans to always do my own work. After
numerous phone calls, I still never found someone who I felt
comfortable, and a British mechanic wouldn't accommodate my immediate
needs. I feel better now, knowing that I did the work myself, and if I
screwed up, I don't have anyone else to blame. Besides, I think I have
jaded myself against ever using a mechanic. Psychologically, I'm not
ready to put my pride and joy into the hands of a pimply faced minimum
wage worker. No offense, but it just isn't the same. The car is absent
of any shaking and purrs along at 100+ mph without a hint of problems.
Thanks to all. Ownership of this car is much more rewarding, when I can
get your help.
Thanks again so much. I can autocross tomorrow with no fear.
Take care
Jay
