>Hi all, I'm having yet more difficulties with my little lady. At 50-70
mph, the rear end makes the whole car shake really violently. Before
this, the rear end made a clunk each time I went from reverse to first
<or vice-versa. I think this is a worn out ring and pinion.
I second the opinion that what you have is a worn out U-joint. Another
test is to drive the car and then to let off the accelerator to see if
it *clunks*. But on the other hand, you do not want to drive it with a
bad U-joint. You may damage the yoke, requiring replacement of the
rear yoke, the front yoke, or worse yet, the driveshaft. Worse, the
drive shaft could break free completely and start bashing your car to
bits from the bottom up. Luckily, you can't pole-vault unless the
guard gets bashed out of place.
The good news is that a U-joint (or two) is relatively cheap to replace.
The bad news is often you need to really whale on it, using a socket
as a 'drift', with a 5-lb. mallet to get it out.
Good luck!
